Goldstein paired up with rock drummer Travis Barker to form TRVS-DJAM, where the two played off of each other's improvisations. In September 2008, their plane crashed after a South Carolina show, nearly killing them both.

In the crash that killed four other people, Goldstein and AM narrowly escaped, but suffered bad burns across their bodies. "My eyebrows and layers of skin were burned off my face ... My forehead was gouged and my arm had skin hanging off. I was in shock and didn't feel anything," Goldstein told PEOPLE.

A month later, DJ AM triumphantly returned to the stage, playing the role of DJ for rap superstar Jay-Z.

I had no idea he was that "old".
What a waste of a second chance at life.

My thoughts and prayers are also with his family. No one deserves to die at his age, no matter what decisions they've made in life.

I'm sorry but I find it hard to mourn over someone who got a second chance at life and wasted it. But I do feel for his family and friends.

Then don't mourn. It's amazing how judgmental people are. Until you have lived in someone else's shoes, don't judge them. I don't do drugs, but I can certainly sympathize with someone that "fell of the wagon" after watching his friends die right in front of him in the plane crash not to mention his own injuries.

My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. To survive a plane crash and have this happen to him is so sad. I feel the crash may have gotten to him and led to him having depression.

You are the first person to say what I though. I think that he was depressed and had some guilt and did not know how to handle his escaping death. He very well could have gotten addicted to pain pills. he could have felt that the pills were not enough to escape his demons. however and either way, it is sad. my heart goes out to his family and friends. He dated my cousin Nicole Richie whom I have never had the pleasure of meeting. I immediately though of her. Though she is with someone else and has a beautiful family, she did love him. I hope that she finds comfort because she loss a friend.
